Every year on May 29th, Namche Bazaar proudly celebrates Everest Day to honor the historic first ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in 1953. Organized by the Namche Youth Group, this special occasion brings together locals, trekkers, mountaineers, and officials to commemorate Sherpa heritage, mountaineering achievements, and the spirit of adventure.
The celebration includes cultural programs, traditional Sherpa dances, speeches by mountaineering legends, and community events. It is also a time to reflect on the importance of mountain conservation, responsible tourism, and the contributions of Sherpa climbers to the world of mountaineering.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of this event, the youth group is actively working to establish a permanent fund with support from organizations and well-wishers. Visitors and trekkers are encouraged to participate in the festivities and support this meaningful tribute to Everest’s legacy.
